Chain Camera Productions and Chain Camera Pictures are
two Los Angeles-based companies led by the creative partnership
of Kirby Dick and Eddie Schmidt. Both companies produce critically acclaimed
feature documentaries for international theatrical and television release.
Since 1997, Productions and Pictures have sold product to HBO, IFC, Cinemax,
Channel 4, the BBC, Sundance Channel, British Film Institute, Haut et Court,
Zeitgeist Films, and Lion's Gate Films.
Dick and Schmidt first collaborated
on Dick's award-winning SICK: THE LIFE AND DEATH OF BOB FLANAGAN, SUPERMASOCHIST,
a moving and scathingly funny account of controversial performance artist,
Bob Flanagan. SICK won the Special Jury Award at the Sundance Film Festival
and the Grand Prize at the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival. With Schmidt
producing, Dick went on to direct the critically acclaimed CHAIN CAMERA,
a frank, intimate and often hilarious look at high school life shot by the
students themselves. CHAIN CAMERA premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and
the Edinburgh Film Festival, with subsequent television debuts on Cinemax and
the BBC.
In 2003, HBO's America Undercover premiered the company's
explosive documentary musical, SHOWGIRLS: GLITZ & ANGST. Directed by
Dick and produced by Schmidt, SHOWGIRLS is an energetic and revealing portrait
of the producers and performers behind a Las Vegas revue. The film was one
of the highest-rated 'Undercover' specials of 2003 and continues to run on
the channel.
Subsequently, Dick and Schmidt's film, THE END, a profound and moving chronicle
of patients and families in a Los Angeles hospice program, premiered at the
South by Southwest Film Festival. Since that time, THE END has received acclaim
from critics, audiences, and educators alike, making its television debut as
part of the 'Cinemax Reel Life' documentary series in October 2004.
Following
THE END, Dick and Schmidt completed TWIST OF FAITH, which received an Academy
Award nomination, won the Audience Award at the Amnesty International Film
Festival, and screened in competition at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival.
TWIST OF FAITH is the powerful story of a man who confronts the trauma of past
sexual abuse as a boy by a Catholic priest, only to find his decision shatters
his relationships with his family, community, and his faith.
Released theatrically in over a dozen U.S. cities, TWIST OF FAITH premiered
on HBO in June 2005 and was released on DVD with a host of special features
in February 2006.
Dick, Schmidt, and Chain Camera Productions' brand new documentary,
THIS FILM IS NOT YET RATED, is a breakthrough investigation into the MPAA film
ratings system and its profound impact on American culture. Financed by the
Independent Film Channel, the film premiered at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival,
where it captured the attention of critics and audiences alike. It
has showcased in other prestigious U.S. festivals including South by Southwest,
Seattle, Los Angeles, and will soon make its international debut at Locarno,
Edingburgh, and New Zealand. On September 1st, 2006, IFC will release
THIS FILM IS NOT YET RATED theatrically in NY and Los Angeles. The
film will expand into other markets and cities throughout September and beyond.
